TAMPA - Dan Smith says hiring a new employee is "one of the best feel-good things that someone gets to do in life."
Smith had plenty of reasons to smile in 2005, and he should have plenty more next year. The managing partner at the Tampa office of Princeton Search Group doubled his staff this year, from six employees to 12. And, thanks to the booming local jobs market, he thinks more growth is in store for his executive search and staffing firm in 2006.
"I think the economy is about as strong as I've seen it in a long time," he said.
Smith isn't the only employer with an upbeat outlook and a growing staff. Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation says the Sunshine State continues to lead the nation in job growth, adding 255,100 jobs during the past 12 months.
Unemployment rates in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties, and for the state as a whole, are down significantly from a year ago. The local and state rates are also at least one percentage point lower than the national average.
"These are the kinds of numbers you want to see in our economy," said Chris Steinocher, vice president for marketing and strategic direction for the Tampa Bay Partnership, a regional economic development group.
An average of 60,000 people move to the Tampa Bay area each year, Steinocher said.
"When you have a healthy unemployment rate that low, it means that we're able to get those people to work right away."
The Agency for Workforce Innovation said professional and business services as a whole - the industry that includes employment services - grew 6.3 percent in the past 12 months, adding 82,800 jobs. Retail trade, transportation, construction, education and health care also posted large increases from a year ago.
